The first mint of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin series occurred in 1989 on the 10th of October. This date was symbolic to gold investments since on this date a new Austrian law was introduced permitting citizens to invest in gold coins. Whilst the new law was introduced, the Austrian Mint wanted to celebrate this event by introducing an Austrian gold coin which would raise the standards among gold coins. The head engraver Thomas Pesendorfer designed the coin featuring the Great Organ of the Musikverein Concert Hall in Vienna on the obverse and a range of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestral musical instruments on the rear.
