The Vienna Philharmonic coin was first released on the 10th of October 1989. In this year, a major change occurred within the Austrian law. The new law which was introduced on October 10th, 1989 permitted the issue of gold coins for investment purposes.

To celebrate the introduction of this new law, The Austrian Mint decided to design a gold coin that had a symbolic connection with Austria. Of course, the Vienna Philharmonic (Wiener Philharmoniker) is key to Austrian heritage and thus chosen to be displayed on the rear of the coin.
