1/10 oz Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin | 2023
There is perhaps no other musical ensemble more consistently and closely associated with the history and tradition of European classical music than the Vienna Philharmonic. And this 1/10 oz Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is an ode to this beautiful orchestra and to Austrian music in general . It is now available on Coininvest!
In November 1998, there was a change in Austrian law that permitted the issue of pure gold coins for investment purposes. So the idea came about to have a gold coin symbolizing Austria. A few different themes were proposed at the time, but it’s no surprise that music was chosen, due to its strong role in the nations’ history and culture. Focus was given to Vienna and its beautiful Philharmonic Orchestra.
Thomas Pesendorfer, the Austrian Mint’s chief engraver is responsible for the entire design of the coin which has not changed since its creation. Mr Pesendorfer has since retired from his work at the Austrian Mint but his creations remain iconic and his work acclaimed throughout the world.
For the reverse side, he decided to depict eight characteristic orchestral instruments: four violins either side of a cello in the foreground and the Viennese horn, the bassoon and the harp behind. The inscription "WIENER PHILHARMONIKER" stands in a semicircle. Beautiful, simple and terribly effective!
On the obverse of 2023 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins is a depiction of the pipe organ found in the Musikverein. The Musikverein is also known as the Golden Concert Hall and is the venue where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs when it is in the capital city of Austria. The original organ was built by Friedrich Ladegast in 1872 and is a result of many influences from his travels around Europe. The organ has had several makeovers and renovations since and continues to look magnificent. The Words REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH are shown above the instrument with the coin’s weight, gold purity, denomination and year of mintage “2023” engraved below.
Struck in pure gold, the Vienna Philharmonic has proved to be a massive hit with investors. One way of visualizing the success of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is to imagine that if all the coins ever sold were piled on top of each other, they would surpass the 8,850 metres of Mount Everest! Mind blowing!
