1/4 gold krugerrand 2022

Unlike some series ( i.e the Chinese Panda series), the Gold Krugerrand 2022 features the same obverse and reverse designs as the other coins in the collection and this makes it a stable, safe option for any buyer.

Produced by the Rand Refinery, it is also the world’s oldest minted bullion coin making it a very desirable product. So far, more than 46 million ounces of fine gold contained in the minted Krugerrands have been sold worldwide which means that more Krugerrands are in circulation internationally than all other gold coins combined.

This ¼ oz size version features the traditional springbok antelope design on the reverse of the coin. This particular design was created in 1947 by Coert Steynberg, a renowned South African sculptor who worked in stone marble, copper and wood. (his work includes the famous statue of Bartholomew Dias in South Africa House in London).

Over the years, the Springbok has become the national animal and emblem of South African. At some point, it represented the values and characteristics of the Afrikaner people during the aparttheid. Quite rightly, the ANC in power and Black South AFrican people decided to change it to the protea, the country’s national flower.

However, Nelson Mandela had other ideas in mind. He understood that Afrikaners wanted to keep their treasured emblem and he used it as a means to an end: bringing the nation together. During the 1995 World Cup Finals against New Zealand, he appeared in the stadium wearing the Springbok green and gold jersey and the Afrikaner crowd shouted “Nelson Nelson Nelson”. Since then, nobody has ever questioned the Springboks as the symbol of South Africa.

The name Kruger comes from the 19th century boer president Paul Kruger (who also gave his name to the famous Kruger Park). It therefore feels logical that his portrayal is featured on the obverse of the coin. The other part of the word, the “rand” originates from Witwastersrand in the Gauteng province where a large amount of gold was found at the end of the 19th century. Hence the name of the coin “krugerrand”.

The Krugerrands were minted to assist in promoting South African Gold to the international markets. Krugerrands were never assigned a face value but were designed to derive their value from the price of Gold at the time they are traded.

The 2022 1/4 Gold Krugerrand is a smart addition to financial portfolios as well as a stunningly beautiful addition to collections. You can acquire it at GoldFlorin in its individual coin form, tubes of 10 or boxes of 500.
